Integrative Medicine and My Leaky Gut

2018/4

While still living with Parkinson’s I was aware of many issues relating to the processing of the food I was eating.  I had trouble digesting many things, often suffering from discomfort, bloating (often painfully so) and indigestion, as well as always having to deal with constipation.

I managed to eliminate gluten containing foods and removed added sugar from my diet before recovery.  This eased some of the issues but certainly did not remove all of the discomfort.  As my main focus had been on continuing to work on my woodwork as the primary means of returning to normal neurological functioning, I did not have much time or energy left to work on other things that appeared to me at that time to be less important right then.  The effort involved in the woodworking utilised huge amounts of energy; I had little left at the end of each day for addressing other things.  Part of my success must be credited to the single-minded manner in which I bloody mindedly pursued my woodworking therapy.

After my recovery some of the issues eased but certainly were not totally eliminated.  Hence my growing realisation that many factors are involved in the causation of Parkinson’s; not a traditional view I know!

I did not really begin to address these gut issues until Marjorie was well on the way to improved health.

I began to make dietary changes based on my reading but with limited success.  This ultimately led me to seek out an Integrative Medicine Practice which I found in Hobart – the same one that has helped Marj so much. With their help I used techniques described in the book “The Gut and Psychology Syndrome” by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, who also has Masters in Neurology and Nutrition.  It took time but I now have a much-improved gut function largely without all the impacts that flow from one that was decidedly “leaky”.

I now do my best to stick to a ketogenic diet which I am able to do while at home but find much more difficult when away.  I have lost a lot of weight (there is more to lose) and have reduced from about 94 Kg at the time of recovery to 81 Kg now.

I am currently working with the Integrative Medicine clinic to deal with identified food and other sensitivities, that also are likely to have fed into a process that ultimately produced Parkinson’s.  I am also in the process of having all my amalgam fillings removed after it was identified that the heavy metals Mercury, Lead and Aluminium are all relevant in my case.  The dentist involved in the amalgam removal is up to date with all the safety precautions required to ensure that risk of further mercury exposure during the amalgam removal process is minimised.  By the end of this month I will have no amalgam remaining and then will work on chelating the residual body load of these metals.
